Mossel Bay: A Hidden Gem on the Garden Route

When we first arrived in Mossel Bay, we were surprised that we had never stayed there before. What we discovered was a coastal town bursting with history, breathtaking scenery, and an array of activities that make it a must - visit stop along the Garden Route.

A Town Steeped in History

Mossel Bay’s history dates back to February 1488, when Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias first landed here to replenish water supplies. His stay was short-lived, as the indigenous Khoisan people drove his crew away by throwing stones.

Later, in 1497, Vasco da Gama successfully traded cattle with the locals, marking an important step in the town’s rich maritime history. The first permanent building, a granary to store wheat, was erected in 1787—a sign of Mossel Bay’s growing importance in trade and settlement.
